We spent a good bit of time today getting access to some programs that students can use on their Chromebooks. Here is a brief summary of the things we discussed today:
1) Reflex Math (working on building fluency/speed with basic facts) 2) Lexia/Core5 (working on all kinds of reading/comprehension/vocab skills) 3) Scholastic StoryWorks (Online version of our classroom magazine. **Access Code: hood2018) The first 2 items are located in the Single Sign On (SSO) section on their log in screen. The StoryWorks site is a link from this webpage (on the links page). We will be adding more resources as we go! Our first quarter theme is "Identity." Most of what we focus on in Social Studies, Writing, and ELA will revolve around the question, "Who am I?"
This can be a tricky concept for fifth graders. The very first project we will do is a culture poster. A person's culture shapes who they are and shows where they came from. For this project, students will create a construction paper poster that shows 5 aspects of their culture. I will be sending home a more detailed information sheet tomorrow, but the students folded their paper and brought it home today. This project is due by Monday, September 10. Please see a blank copy of the poster below.... We made it through the first week! It seems like a blur! I'm proud of the work we have done so far and I can tell it is going to be a great year in 5H. We began creating our classroom charter today by thinking about how we want to feel in our class. So many good responses! Can't wait to get back to work on Monday... enjoy your weekend!
p.s. Charge up the Chromebooks and check Google Classroom for the FlipGrid intro videos! The long-awaited Chromebooks are coming home TODAY! We talked briefly at school about the importance of being SMART with the Chromebook privilege. Please reinforce this idea with your 5th grader. We will be gradually increasing our use of the Chromebooks in class. If you have any questions or concerns about the Chromebooks, please refer to the IPSD 1-to-1 Handbook or contact Mr. Hood. I'm looking forward to using these powerful tech tools to push our learning to the next level.
Welcome to 5th Grade! I am so very excited to meet you and get our year together started. This is our website that we will use this year. There are all kinds of useful things here, so be sure to check back often. Feel free to browse old posts and pictures to get an idea about your upcoming year with me. Keep in mind that every year is unique so things may be different for this year.
