Tomorrow, we will be finalizing our topics for our Genius Hour project. Topics can be as simple as choosing a topic that the student is interested in learning more about. Topics can also branch off into other unpredictable ways! We will be flexible with this project, but to remain true to the process, we will focus our work on our guiding question.
For example, I will be doing this process alongside the students. I am choosing "Educational Tech & Apps" as my big topic. My guiding question is: "What are two new products or apps that I can use to support our learning in the classroom?" My Final Project will be to integrate these two new products/apps into our learning. To share what I have learned, I may create a how-to video so that other teachers can adopt these products/apps. I may create a visual step-by-step diagram to teach students how to use the products/apps. I may even find someone that is already an expert at these products/apps and bring them to our class to demonstrate! The point of the project is to go through the design process (with all of it's twists and turns) and to create & share a final project. This project is so far removed from the typical school project that the students are filled with questions. I can tell they are uneasy about embarking on this project. However, it is the experience of going through the design process that will be most beneficial. Please contact me at any time if you have questions or concerns about the Genius Hour project. I am excited to try something new, and I can't wait to see all the awesome things that the students will create! We had the Granger Band & Orchestra teachers come and introduce the fifth graders to the instruments they can choose to play next year. They will be back throughout November and December as part of their "Prelude" program. Also, this week is Spirit Week! Tomorrow is Crazy Hair Day!
For October 16 - 20.
