Finally a day cool enough to have the windows open and enjoy some fresh air! We did a word sorting activity this morning with our word study list. So far, we have covered three different kinds of syllables: closed, open, and VC-e.
Accel Math will be having their Unit 1 Test on Friday of this week. It covers multiplication and division using decimals and fractions. We also completed our second BreakoutEdu challenge of the year. This game was called "The Dot." It is based on a short story with a powerful message. Since we broke out in under 30 minutes, the class earned a movie day pass! We will be making some decisions about our movie day tomorrow during our class meeting time. Also, just a quick reminder that 1st Quarter Progress Reports will be coming home this Friday in the gray Friday Folder.

Lesson 4 Open Syllables For 9/25/17 - 9/29/17
Very Brief Highlights from today:
** Started rough draft of our "Where I'm From" poems ** LMC Book Checkout ** New Wizer.me / Google Classroom assignment in Accel Math ** Almost finished Posted More excitement tomorrow!! This Word Study list is for September 18-22. We will be focusing on scooping the syllables since we will be covering two different kinds of syllables (closed and VCe).
Our first full week is in the books! Here are some things we are looking forward to next week...
**We will be crafting our "Where I'm From" poems and making a decision about a digital product. **We will be narrowing down and discussing the Genius Hour projects! Ideally, we will have everyone focused in on a single topic by the start of October. **We will be finishing our read aloud selection, Posted. I'll be sure to highlight our next selection. **We will be wrapping up our first chapter in Social Studies (chapter 4). We will be taking a short assessment, but since it is the first chapter we have covered, it will be more of a walk-through. **We will be trying a new BreakoutEdu challenge with 2 new locks! It will be another busy week in 5H. Enjoy your weekend! Today we talked about our Q1 writing project called the "Where I'm From" poem. It is a natural fit with our Q1 theme of Identity. The project itself is modeled after a real poem by George Ella Lyon.
Today, we started our Culture Poster Presentations! It is amazing to see and learn so much about my students' families.
We are reading a story called, "Yang the Third and Her Impossible Family" this week in reading. It is about a girl who struggles to balance her family's old culture with her new American culture. We also started Lesson 2 in Word Study. Here is a link to the list. Tomorrow is PICTURE DAY! Please refer to the order form sent home last week if you have any questions. Wednesday night is our Curriculum Night at Nancy Young. Please consider coming to one of the sessions to learn all about your child's year in 5th grade. Another busy Friday is in the books! We took our Sees Behind Trees quiz and visited the LMC for a checkout in the morning. While PA was out, we reviewed the four basic types of sentences: questions, exclamations, statements, and commands.
In Accel Math, we took some time to connect to our Google Classroom, which is also connected to Khan Academy. We are currently experimenting with this, so I have not yet decided how much or how often we will be using these tech tools. Students seemed more engaged with using the laptops, so it might be a common occurrence! We had a surprise fire drill in the afternoon and we finished reading lesson one in chapter four during Social Studies. It is all about the explorations of Christopher Columbus. For this first chapter, we will be doing almost everything together as a class. Once the students are familiar with our fifth grade expectations, the notes and work will be more independent. Students are bringing their grey Friday Folders home today. Please check the graded work, sign by today's date, and return the folder on Monday! Enjoy the weekend! I am looking forward to meeting all of my students' parents at Curriculum Night on Wednesday! Today we completed the rest of our beginning of the year CBM testing. Results should be available in the Home Access Center website by early October.
We spent some time in our Google Classroom today looking at the first two assignments. The first assignment is an article on the website NewsELA.com. We will be using this site throughout the year for work with nonfiction articles. The second assignment is the September book report. This will be done entirely on Google Classroom. It is due on September 29, which is the last school day of the month. Similar book reports will be done each month in fifth grade. School District 204 Google account information has been provided for each student in their assignment notebooks. Logins and passwords can also be located in the Home Access Center. Tomorrow is the due date for our culture poster project. I can't wait to see all the finished products! There are so many things happening here at school! We continued working through the story, Sees Behind Trees with partner reading and vocabulary work.
We had another book checkout and we'll be talking this week about our very first book report! In accel math, we continued our review of operations with decimals. Today and Friday will be all about multiplying with decimals and getting the rust off our math brain cells. The school social worker, Mrs. Corsello, visited our room and talked about interacting with some of the supported education students new to our building. NYE houses two self-contained rooms this year. Picture day is set for Wednesday, September 12. Also, I sent home the first book order of the year. Ordering can be easily done on-line or the old-fashioned way. Please keep checking back often for our daily updates! |
