Today was the first day with the new section. We know Mrs. Saari is going to have a great year with an awesome group of kids. We started our day with a quick meeting before the first tornado drill. Everyone did exactly as they were expected!
We took our first reading quiz on The Hot & Cold Summer. These will be graded and returned next Friday in the grey Friday Folder. The folders did not come home today since there was no graded work to return. We also took the first Word Study quiz. Our focus this week was on closed syllables. We will not be doing a list next week due to some beginning of the year benchmark testing. Another "first" we had today was math. More information about math classes will be coming home soon. Now that the logistics of the new section have been sorted, things will be closer to our normal routine. A green sheet was sent home today explaining the fee for StoryWorks magazine. Please kindly send in the noted amount so that we can continue to use this irreplaceable resource. We logged in to our Google Classroom for the first time after a short extra recess this afternoon. I am so excited to get this tool up and running! Our class conduct charter word cloud is finished. Now that we have a visual representation of the kinds of feelings we want in our class, we will create a list of actions that we will take to ensure these feelings are created. I will post a picture of our final charter next week! Enjoy the long weekend!

We had another busy day in 5H. Our day began with a class meeting. We talked about the new fifth grade section and how we can look at it with a positive mindset.
We spent our ELA time this morning working on reviewing The Hot and Cold Summer. The class answered some comprehension questions in their journals. We also completed a summary of the StoryWorks article we read yesterday. As a short writing activity, we watched a short film called, "Alike." The students tried to pick out the director's message/purpose. It is quite a profound video! For Social Studies, the students worked as small teams to complete a textbook scavenger hunt activity. Our focus this year is on American history. I'm looking forward to another good day tomorrow! Our morning began with our first fire drill. We will be doing practice drills these first few weeks of school to remind students what they should do in an emergency.
We continued our reading of The Hot & Cold Summer with partners today. Sharing the reading and hearing another person read out loud is great practice. We will be taking a short quiz on this story from our textbook on Thursday. We also began reading our new issue of Scholastic StoryWorks Magazine. We read a timely piece about the flooding that took place in Louisiana last year. In Social Studies, we started discussing our first project: the culture poster. Students were given an explanation sheet and a piece of construction paper. The poster will be presented to the class and posted in our hallway. We also took time out to play a challenging game! The goal was to get all the frogs on the other side of the log in under a minute! The students had fun coming up to the smart board and trying to figure it out. It is harder than it looks! Most importantly, we took time to begin creating our classroom charter. We watched a short video explaining the concept, and then we wrote our ideas on post it notes. Our next step will be to study the list and come up with actions we can take to make our charter stick. Finally, we will make an actual charter to display in our room. It is important that we match our actions to the kinds of feelings we want to see in our room. Finally, we had a brief discussion about the new 5th grade section that has been created. Please know that even in the short 3-4 days I have spent with my class, it already feels like a family. I know that a week or two of adjustment will be most beneficial in the course of the year, but it is difficult to lose any of "my kids." Ms. Morgan has studied this issue over the last several days and has created the new class. Teachers were not involved in creating the new class. I ask that you please direct any questions to Ms. Morgan. We will certainly make the best of this opportunity and Mrs. Saari is going to make a wonderful addition to our team! Our first Monday! We began our day with our first morning meeting. We will try to start each day with a short class meeting to get focused and ready to learn. Today, we did a quick activity to share one thing that makes us each happy. Mondays are Art days! We got to visit Mrs. Gelso and begin working on our hallway work frames. They will display current work in our fifth grade hallway. We also went to the Library Media Center (LMC) for our orientation with Mrs. Ranucci. After the brief overview, students were able to check out 2 books for independent reading. We started our first whole-class reading story, The Hot & Cold Summer. We will take a short quiz on this story on Thursday morning. Students are encouraged to take the green Harcourt textbook home to re-read the story during the week. Another area we started today was Word Study! Lesson 1 is all about closed syllables. We will have a short quiz on Lesson 1 words this Thursday. I realize it is a short week, but it is mostly review from the work they completed in fourth grade. I have attached the list in a file below.
Today, we worked a bit more on getting to know each other. Did you know we have 5 lefties in our class? We are slowly and carefully building our classroom culture to represent the best we can each offer. I am certain that it is going to be a fantastic year.
We took a short walk this morning to clear our brains after a few activities. It is definitely something I am hoping to do quite frequently. I was pleasantly surprised at how well-mannered our class was during the walk. During specials block, students learned all about the opportunity to join the NYE Spirit Council. It is an awesome experience for our fifth graders - please consider joining! Our very first Friday Folder (grey) came home today! Please check out the ClassDojo sign up sheet and the Parent Survey. Also, please sign the signature page inside the folder and return the grey folder to school on Monday. We read a story called Ugly Fish and completed our very first Reading Response activity. I can't wait to see what the students thought about this funny picture book. Enjoy your weekend! What an incredible day! I had so much fun trying to get to know as many of my students as possible. I know it is going to be a great year. We started our day with getting settled. It wasn't really exciting, but it is a necessary step. It can take a long time to get supplies labeled and organized!
We also attempted our very first Breakout game! I learned so much about the students by watching them use the 4 C's during this game. Check out this link for more details about the BreakoutEdu concept. Although we did not officially "Breakout," we did learn a lot about how the game works and how we can approach tasks like this in the future. My goal is to try a game every week so that we can become excellent problem-solvers. We also started our very first read aloud selection today. It is called Posted, by John David Anderson. I cannot wait to be a part of all the learning and growth we will accomplish this year! Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions or concerns! Welcome to our classroom website! Much, much more coming very soon!
