Our morning began with our first fire drill. We will be doing practice drills these first few weeks of school to remind students what they should do in an emergency.
We continued our reading of The Hot & Cold Summer with partners today. Sharing the reading and hearing another person read out loud is great practice. We will be taking a short quiz on this story from our textbook on Thursday. We also began reading our new issue of Scholastic StoryWorks Magazine. We read a timely piece about the flooding that took place in Louisiana last year. In Social Studies, we started discussing our first project: the culture poster. Students were given an explanation sheet and a piece of construction paper. The poster will be presented to the class and posted in our hallway. We also took time out to play a challenging game! The goal was to get all the frogs on the other side of the log in under a minute! The students had fun coming up to the smart board and trying to figure it out. It is harder than it looks! Most importantly, we took time to begin creating our classroom charter. We watched a short video explaining the concept, and then we wrote our ideas on post it notes. Our next step will be to study the list and come up with actions we can take to make our charter stick. Finally, we will make an actual charter to display in our room. It is important that we match our actions to the kinds of feelings we want to see in our room. Finally, we had a brief discussion about the new 5th grade section that has been created. Please know that even in the short 3-4 days I have spent with my class, it already feels like a family. I know that a week or two of adjustment will be most beneficial in the course of the year, but it is difficult to lose any of "my kids." Ms. Morgan has studied this issue over the last several days and has created the new class. Teachers were not involved in creating the new class. I ask that you please direct any questions to Ms. Morgan. We will certainly make the best of this opportunity and Mrs. Saari is going to make a wonderful addition to our team!
